The focus on skilled migration and education and training will continue in 2023, as the nation looks for solutions to its persistent labour shortages.
Federal Parliament inquiries are underway into migration as a pathway to nation building, and into the perceptions and status of vocational education and training (VET).
In the VETASSESS submission to the Productivity Commission inquiry into a more productive labour market, we argue that if Australia embraces the opportunity to get policies and settings right, migrants can once again be a driver of growth through productivity.
VETASSESS is participating in several projects to address skills gaps, including skills assessments for migrants who are already in Australia but who are working below their skill level, to help them fully participate in the economy and assist with skills shortages.
It is acknowledged that Australia must train, and retrain, its own citizens to fill skills shortages, rather than rely on migration, and in this context it is encouraging to see a reinvigorated focus on vocational education and training (VET).
